100 Interviews - my personal challenge for 2007

I plan to interview 100 of Bermuda's most colourful characters before the end of the years.
They are all featured in a weekly column in the Mid-Ocean News (my paper of course), but to read them for yourselves, you can visit: www.100interviews.blogspot.com
Hopefully you will have as much fun reading these stories as I did conducting them and chatting to people about their lives, their dreams and hopes for a better Bermuda and in some cases, as with Colin Benbow (pictured here with his pet pig, Porky) learning how important history is in our global village...
Have fun!

And now for something "different"

Don't ask me, I must publish these photos online.

LW sent them to me and I believe him when he says they were part of a "project" he had to work on.

Or so he says....

My cousins from Namibia and the Cape

LW, Lehesta and Lukie - all very creative in various ways.
Lukie lives in Stellenbosch, Lehesta lives in Cape Town and LW is living in Windhoek, Namibia.
Their mother, Tessa, is my aunt on my mom's side.
She lives in Windhoek.

All the best in 2007

Another year has rolled by and thankfully not much has changed. While everyone thinks change is good - when you have moved as much as we have in the last 6 years and you've had some of the experiences we've had - then no, change is not good. Boring is GOOD!

Why?

1. We are still living in beautiful (and warm) Bermuda. Surrounded by some of the world's most beautiful beaches - 22 square miles of tropical (sometimes) paradise where the cost of living may be high - but it's worth it for the peace and tranquility, friends and experiences we have on a daily basis. What could be better than being able to go swimming all year round - not that we do... but we could!

2. We still have wonderful jobs. Ok, so there has been once change. I am once again starting a new job, but this time I'm back in news for the Mid-Ocean newspaper. Now before you go and get all in my face about change... think about this - I literally moved from one desk to another less than 50 metres away. Yip, the Mid-Ocean is in the same building, owned by the same company - but yes, it is in opposition to the former Royal Gazette. If you want to check us out go to www.theroyalgazette.com and choose the Mid-Ocean News option in the left hand section. Voila!!!

3. We still have a lovely apartment. We have peace and quiet to a certain extent. Recently neighbours moved into the apartment down the hill AND they have about five yapping dogs. Not good! One is called biscuit or bubble or something and sometimes I do feel like either chewing it to death or blowing it up. We also recently discovered the landlord had fixed a water pump that never worked - not in the four years we've lived here anyway. So now we have a water pump behind our bedroom wall which sounds like a Black Hawk helicopter taking off when someone flushes their toilet. Thanks 2007 - we needed that at 2 a.m.

4. We still have our beautiful three cats. (I can't possibly say anything else about that).

5. We have brand new motorcycles which are equally fast and get us from point A to B in relative safety. Instead of facing the TCD (Traffic Department) to renew the licenses on the old bikes - we sold them and bought new ones. That way the shop had to go through all that shit downtown. No problem. What a relief. But besides that, they're very, very nice 125 cc bikes.

6. Most importantly we have each other. Mark and I will be married 7 years come November and he will agree (under the threat of having his knee caps broken) that we are still very much in love and happily married. We had a good old fashioned snog out on the lawn today. Now for you guys who don't know what a snog is - it's a good old fashioned kiss. Wonderful!

What does 2007 hold in store for the Walters?

Well, we are very excited at the prospect of having the Abbott's finally visit us in Bermuda in about six month's time. Wow! Hopefully Mr. Abbott will have mastered motorcycle riding by then and that will save me having to get us about on buses. Please let it be true.

We also once again have some wonderful opportunities for travel this year and plan to return to the city of brotherly love - Philadelphia, but also hope to get to Vermont by December. A white Christmas sounds very nice don't you think?

And yes, we both plan to shake some more weight.

Not sure if everyone knows this because I didn't exactly want to admit just how fat I've gotten over the last seven years, but I joined Curves last year and managed to lose 26 pounds in total.

I plan to repeat that experience (hopefully before my 36th birthday in February). Who knows... I might even lose 40 pounds before December.

So that's our news.

We wish you all the best for 2007 and look forward to sharing some of our experiences, both here and on our travels with you all.

Love and hugs from Mark and Tricia Walters (and three cats that are curled up around the heater right now).
